Husein Badruddin Tyabji

by Robert Tyabji

I remember meeting Uncle Husein and Aunt Mahmooda only once, in their bungalow in one of Bombay's leafy suburbs, Andheri I think. He was the oldest living Tyabji and my parents made sure I was properly prepped and dressed for the occasion! His tall, wiry build, upright stature, snow white beard, twinkling eyes and marvelous sense of humour belied his 90+ years. Aunt Mahmooda was also quite tall, not as tall as Husein, but thin and equally attentive and alert.

DOWNING PROFILES: 125 years ago Downing law student Husain Badruddin Tyabji (1891) scratched his name on a window pane in P staircase. It is still there and, last week, the College welcomed back his great granddaughter and great great grandson (a current Cambridge student) to see it. Husain was admitted toMiddle Temple shortly after matriculating and was called to the Bar in 1896. He became a Judge in Bombay and wrote a biography of his father, Badruddin Tyabji, the first Muslim Judge in Bombay and President of the third session of the Indian National Congress. He died nine days after his 100th birthday in 1974. (Images courtesy of Ahmereen Reza and the Tayabji family). The name of another Indian student, D N Kak (1906), is etched on a window in the same room. Read more about Downing's early Indian students: http://www.dow.cam.ac.uk/.../downing-college-and-india.
