Motabavaji's Obituary
This is a translation of Motabavaji’s Obituary printed in a Gujarati Newspaper in 1942. He was my mother Roshan Pundole’s grandfather.
The late Jamshedji Faramji Kharas, died aged 91 on 10th September 1942.
Upon completing his studies in Bombay, age 18, he joined Messrs C MacDonald & Co as a salesman.
He then went on to work at Messrs George Robinson and Co. Cotton Merchants of Manchester, with whom he had the opportunity to travel to Europe 3 times...he left this business in 1911. He was an honorary member of the magistrate's bench for 13 years
21st Oct 1932, he celebrated his diamond wedding anniversary.
He was a very forward thinking man with a modern outlook.
He was an avid swimmer and sportsman who loved the outdoors.
In 1879 he was involved in establishing and operating the Parsi Boating Club, where he was known as the 'Grand Old Man'. He used to partake in the daily evening 'rollings'.
11 March 1939, at the Royal Bombay Yacht Club, he saved a couple whose yacht had capsized, from drowning.
A simple life, a simple diet and outdoor exercise were the key to his long and healthy life- something younger generations can learn from.
