Building the Studio, July-August 2010

Robert Tyabji, Hollywood, July-August 2010

Our visit to Michel and Rosa in Hollywood was timed to help him build his new studio. Michel had already begun work on converting his double garage when we arrived. The auto-door had been removed, a first layer of R13 insulation had been applied to the roof and the three outer walls and the 2x4 frames and 8\'x4\' gypsum panels had been installed.

However, much remained to be done and we resolved to complete the project before returning to Malaysia. The main tasks remaining were:

  • instal additional insulation on the roof and floor
  • construct a false ceiling
  • instal a floating floor and a stage for drums and other instruments
  • construct a double-door sound-isolating vestibule for the studio entrance
  • construct a sound-proofed room to house the computers, audio processors, fans, air conditioner and other noise-producing equipment
  • build a quiet exhaust system to evacuate warm air
  • instal power lines from the main breaker box and providing power outlets where needed
  • instal noise and interference-free lighting.

We began work on 1 August and finished in the evening of the 30'th, in time to spread out on the carpet and congratulate each other. Michel and I would begin work around 8 am and often continued till late at night. There were no breaks except for trips in the van to The Home Depot to purchase materials; we also made time to take in Carmen at the Hollywood Bowl, Inception and Eat, Pray, Love (hear Michel's music), and for an occasional visit to friends' houses or for a bite in the neighborhood.

Michel's friend Kito and Rosa's brother Greg contributed greatly to the project. Hootoksi's support was indispensable in putting on the finishing touches, fetching and carrying, and keeping the work area clean. Last but by no means least, Hootoksi and Rosa kept us nourished physically and spiritually and made sure there were no distractions to deviate us from our track.

Working with Michel shoulder to shoulder has been a spiritually rewarding experience and one which I am keen to repeat at any time. Thank you!
